If so, these are called non-probate assets and you must plan your beneficiaries for them separately. Any retirement plan (IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension), investment or bank account, life insurance policy or donor advised fund may be gifted by designating the College as a beneficiary. If you are interested in making a gift but are also concerned about your future needs, keep in mind that beneficiary designation gifts are among the most flexible of all charitable gifts.

Planning & Giving

Bequests

A bequest is a flexible and customizable gift of personal assets made through a will or living trust and specifies how your estate will be distributed after your lifetime. You can declare a specific dollar amount or specify a percentage of your estate for the College. Additionally, a bequest can be designated for an explicit purpose so you have peace of mind knowing your gift will be used as intended. To make a bequest, consult with an estate attorney and complete a letter of intent to inform the SMCM Foundation of your estate plans. Below is sample bequest language.
