St. Mary\u2019s College of Maryland Office of Public Safety is responsible for gathering and publishing information required by the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act. Questions regarding any of the information contained in the college\u2019s annual security report may be directed to Deputy Chief Christopher Coons at (240) 895-4911<\/a> or ccoons@smcm.edu<\/a><\/p>\n

The Clery Act requires that the College annually publish statistical information regarding certain crimes reported to the Office of Public Safety, Title IX, Office of Student Conduct, and other faculty and staff identified as a Campus Security Authority. Crime statistics are also requested from local law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n

Chief's Welcome Message<\/h3><\/i><\/div>

As Chief of Campus Police, it is my privilege to present the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report for St. Mary\u2019s College of Maryland. This report reflects our unwavering commitment to providing a safe, secure, and supportive environment for every member of our campus community.<\/p>\n

Safety is a shared responsibility. While our Public Safety team works tirelessly patrolling campus, responding to calls, conducting safety education, and maintaining readiness for emergencies, true safety is achieved when each student, faculty, staff member, and visitor takes an active role. This includes being aware of your surroundings, reporting suspicious activity, and familiarizing yourself with the safety resources available to you.<\/p>\n

In this report, you will find important information about crime statistics, fire safety procedures, emergency response protocols, and the many services we provide. Transparency is one of our core values, and we believe that by sharing this information openly, we empower our community to make informed decisions and engage in proactive safety practices.<\/p>\n

I encourage you to read this report carefully, participate in our safety programs, and reach out to the Office of Public Safety with questions, concerns, or suggestions. Introduction<\/h3><\/i><\/div>

This document is provided in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act (Clery Act) and the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA). These two acts along with periodic updates and reauthorizations mandate that institutions of higher education provide specific information. The information in this report includes policies, crime statistics for the previous 3 years, fire statistics for the previous 3 years, safety tips, emergency phone numbers and an overview of some of the programs offered by St. Mary\u2019s College of Maryland (the College). The annual statistics are prepared by collecting crime data from the College\u2019s Office of Public Safety, the Office of Student Affairs, and other Campus Security Authorities. In addition to information provided by on-campus reporters, the Office of Public Safety also requests crime statistics for specified geographic locations from local law enforcement agencies. After the crime statistics are compiled, they are included in this Annual Security and Fire Report and submitted to the Department of Education. This report includes crime statistics from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The Office of Public Safety<\/h3><\/i><\/div>

Çï¿ûÊÓƵ\u2019s Office of Public Safety provides campus safety and security for the College.<\/p>\n

Full time Campus Police Officers, full and part-time Public Safety Officers, along with full and part-time trained dispatchers, provide a variety of services to the College community on a 24-hour basis. The Office may employ and train students to perform dispatch services to supplement agency operations.<\/p>\n

It is the mission of the Office of Public Safety to create a safer and more harmonious community through a holistic approach that prioritizes community policing, cultural competence, emotional intelligence, and procedural justice. We are committed to building strong and meaningful relationships with the community we serve, working collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to identify and address public safety concerns effectively. Our community policing initiative aims to foster trust, open communication, and mutual respect, empowering everyone to play an active role in enhancing public safety.<\/p>\n

The Office of Public Safety consists of both Sworn Campus Police Officers and Non-Sworn Public Safety Officers. Sworn Campus Police Officers are sworn Law Enforcement Officers under the Maryland Special Police Commission Act. Campus Police Officers have the authority to detain and arrest on the property of St. Mary\u2019s College of Maryland. Public Safety Officers do not have the authority to arrest but do have the authority to detain.<\/p>\n

The Office of Public Safety works in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies when it receives reports of criminal activity.<\/p>\n

The Office of Public Safety derives its enforcement authority from Maryland Law, the Maryland Education article, and the Board of Trustees. All Campus Police Officers enforce the policies of Çï¿ûÊÓƵ as well as Local, State and Federal Law.<\/p>\n
