What is an Honors College Education?

St. Mary’s College of Maryland is the nation’s first standalone public honors college, designated by the Maryland Legislature in 1992 as the state’s public honors college. An honors education starts with the combination of a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum and an interactive learning environment defined by close mentoring relationships between students and the faculty. This is a natural complement to our liberal arts curriculum, through which students will learn how to approach a problem from a range of perspectives, disciplines, and methods.
